Australian Hockey Player Amputates Finger to Ensure Participation in Paris 2024 Olympics

Matthew Dawson, an accomplished Australian field hockey player, has made a remarkable decision to ensure his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Following a severe injury in which he broke his right ring finger during a pre-Olympic competition, Dawson chose to have part of his finger amputated rather than opt for a cast. This bold decision was driven by his determination not to miss the opportunity to compete at the highest level and was made after a thorough consultation with medical professionals.

The 30-year-old Dawson recounted the urgency and difficulty of the choice, sharing, “I had made the decision and then I called my wife. She said, ‘I don’t want you to make a rash decision,’ but I made an informed decision with the plastic surgeon at the time, not only for the opportunity to play in Paris but for life after as well,” Dawson explained to 7News. “The best option was for me to take the top of my finger off.”

Dawson, a pivotal member of Australia’s men’s field hockey team, the Kookaburras, since 2014, has a storied career that includes participation in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Kookaburras secured a silver medal in Tokyo, losing to Belgium in a dramatic penalty shootout. This latest injury, however, presented a significant challenge, but Dawson’s unwavering commitment to his sport and team shone through.

Colin Batch, the head coach of the Australian national team, praised Dawson’s determination. “Full marks to Matt. I’m not sure I would have done it, but he’s done it, so great. He’s certainly set the bar high for anyone getting a broken finger in the future,” Batch said, underscoring the rarity and extremity of Dawson’s decision.

Despite the amputation, Dawson’s focus remains steadfast on the upcoming Olympics. He has already resumed training, with his partially amputated finger protected by a guard. His goal is to help the Kookaburras secure their first Olympic gold medal since 2004. The Australian team will kick off their Olympic campaign against Argentina on July 27.

Reflecting on his decision, Dawson expressed gratitude for the relatively minor nature of his injury in the broader context. “There are plenty of other issues and other people going on with other stuff in their lives that are bigger than losing a finger, so I’m very fortunate that it’s just a little bit of my finger,” he said. This is not the first time Dawson has faced significant injury. In November 2018, he nearly lost an eye after being struck by a teammate’s stick during practice.

Dawson also competes domestically for Australia’s NSW Waratahs in the Australian Hockey League, further showcasing his commitment and passion for field hockey. His extraordinary decision and determination serve as a testament to his dedication and the lengths to which athletes will go to achieve their dreams and represent their countries on the world stage.
